Tamron 19-35 / 3.5-4.5

Good choice ? (29th Dec. 2002) - Updated 18.8.2004

Affordable wide angle zoom. I was thinking to buy wide angle lens and that task surely wasn't an easy one. Basically there are too many choices available but none of them is perfect. Here are listed some of the available:

  • Tamron 19-35/3.5-4.5
  • Tamron 17-35/2.8-4.0 (spring '03)
  • Nikkor 17-35/2.8
  • Nikkor 18-35/3.5-4.5
  • Tokina 19-35/3.5-4.5
  • Tokina 20-35/2.8
  • Sigma 15-35
  • Sigma 19-35

Buy choosing Tamron's 19-35 I took a little risk. I haven't had any Tamron products earlier and I didn't know what to expect. However it was positive surprise how well built the lens is. Yes, it is made from plastic, but so are my other lenses. This one is however probably my best lens in mechanical quality sense. Minor complain is the stiff mount. Compared to my other lenses this one needs a really firm grip between zoom and focus ring to mount. It might be just my lens, but it is really stiff. Once mounted it acts like molded. Optical results will be added later as I haven't got any pictures back yet. Lense comes with flower shape hood. Below is image with F80+Tamron attached.

First impressions

After first ten rolls this lens proves to be pretty capable lens. Only complain so far is the ability to flare really easily. This is typical problem with wide angle lenses and you really have to be careful to control it. I have some pictures which didn't have sun in the frame and still there was flare. Other than that the lens is excellent for the money.

I added some pictures so that you can see how the lens performs. You can find them by clicking link below:

Tamron in digital body

As I said earlier with film body this Tamron was really allergic to sun meaning that you will have flare in pictures if sun is near the frame. However with my D70 things are totally different. The flare problem is almost gone, but safely I can say it is reduced by 80%. It depends on the angle sun is but overall, sunset shots are possible again. This huge improvement must be due the crop factor of digital body. So if you are looking for cheap wide angle, which will give you also ultra wide with film body then I can recommend this one. At least give it a try.

There are two hires pictures taken with Nikon D70 available at gallery below. I'm sorry that I had to recompress them due to large file size. Other one with white church was taken with f16 and the other one with f13 aperture.
