Lowepro Orion Trekker - Your first backpack ?

Usually when you buy SLR camera you do get a bag along it or you end to buy shoulder bag. This might be the right solution for you for a while at least. When your equipment grows you suddenly feel uncomfortable to carry all the stuff in your shoulder. Try it for a day and I bet you will have shoulder/neck pains. To avoid this you should consider backpack.

Lowepro does make many kind of backpacks and Orion Trekker is the cheapest. It looks a lot like ordinary backpack as you can see below.

Most of the photo backpacks have just one compartment which includes several divided sections to store all the equipment. This bag consist two compartments instead. Bottom compartment is more like shoulder bag style which can be divided in to sections and the upper compartment takes some snacks, clothes or equipment.

The bottom

Bottom compartment is quite small but after a little thinking you can squeeze quite a lot of stuff there. It won't take camera with tele-zoom attached but smaller lenses will go nicely. I was able to fit all this to the bottom (as you can see in the picture):

  • Nikon F80 with MB16 and Tamron 19-35 attached
  • Sigma 70-300 zoom
  • Nikkor 28-80D
  • Nikkor 50/1.8
  • Batteries

Upper compartment

Upper part of the bag is small but you can fit all the important stuff there. I used it for filters, films and snacks.

Inside the upper compartment there are also two pockets with zippers inside. There is also one pocket outside the bag with a zipper.

Backside which is against your back is pretty comortable and shoulder straps are well padded. There is also chest and waist straps with locks.

Conclusion

Orion Trekker is good first bag for your photo equipment. You will carry comfortable it for a day as it has good straps and two compartment solution might work for you but not for every one. Only one weakness that came to my mind was the fact that shoulder straps weren't secured with extra band but instead they were just sewed together with front and back pieces. This hasn't caused any problems so far and straps seem to be well sewn. Minor issue is also the fact that when you are taking equipment out of the bag you need to stop and put it down but that is case with all backpacks I guess.
